Day 26- 27: Thursday, March 29-March 30th, 2018. Kruger to Johannesburg, South Africa
Had breakfast at La Lachere hotel and drove back to Johannesburg (Joberg) Arrived at our airbnb at a trendy neighborhood called Maboneng with restaurants, cafes, and nightlife. The structure of the building where our airbnb was was remodeled, modern stacked shipping containers which gave it an industrial look from the outside.
We kept reading and hearing that Joburg is dangerous and to vigilant not to get robbed but that Maboneng was rather safe as long was we stayed within its borders and used common sense.
We went out in Maboneng and ate at a trendy restaurant called the Living Room
with a nice city view of the night skyline and many plants.
Went out to a club/ lounge called Shakers and made some friends. An old famous singer Ishmael was there singing his South African old hits. People had bottle service and hookahs as well as dancing.
Today was Good Friday, widely celebrated by Joberg residents and considered a national holiday. Therefore, most businesses were closed. We spent the day driving around the South Western Townships area (Soweto) home of the Mandela House (closed that day), and saw the famous twin towers that powered the city during the Apartheid. Walked around part of Constitution Hill where Gandhi was imprisoned 50 years before Mandela when they were fighting for racial equality.
Hung out a Melville, cute area with one trendy restaurants and shops which reminded me of the hip Portland area. Supposed to be a college town area but during the day we saw non college students as well.
Also visited 44 Square which is a small cute Brentwood, CA type of plaza with nice shops and places to eat.
